Students from AgroParisTech Montpellier Campus visit Juffet’s mill in Montbazin

A group of ten students accompanied by Gabrielle Rudi, AgroParisTech lecturer, Guillaume Juan from the Centre de Ressources Captages-OFB, and Johan Coulomb from Montpellier Méditerranée Métropole visited the Moulin de Juffet on Tuesday January 23.

Pierre Benau, the mill’s owner, and Philippe Gaffiero, president of the Forum de Montbazin association, were on hand to show the mill in operation. Gabrielle Rudi explained the reasons for such a visit:

“The students present today specialize in water, agriculture and climate change, and are interested in the mill project, not least because it will help develop new sectors, particularly for old varieties of cereals and pulses. “

These students will be looking at how to set up these sectors at local level. Of particular interest to them is the fact that these sectors are said to be “low-impact”, and that some of them will consume less water and even fewer agricultural inputs such as nitrogen fertilizers and pesticides. “This will help preserve water resources in the region.

Phnom Penh Water Supply Authority claims that Phnom Penh no longer faces water shortages

Long Naro, Director General of the Phnom Penh Water Supply Authority, affirmed that Phnom Penh will no longer face a shortage of clean water for use, as the Phnom Penh Water Supply Authority has a production capacity of about 1 million cubic metres per day, while the demand is only about 820,000 cubic metres.

Speaking to the media at the ground-breaking ceremony for the installation of 1,200 mm, 1,400 mm, and 1,600 mm water pipes along Win-Win Boulevard on January 29, 2024, Long Naro said that the guarantee of sufficient water supply is due to the capacity of the Phnom Penh Water Supply Authority to produce more water while a series of water treatment plants have been completed.

The director general continued that from the end of February 2024, the Phnom Penh Water Supply Authority will have the capacity to produce more than 1 million cubic metres per day, while the current demand is only about 820,000 cubic metres. The challenge is the lack of water mains, which is why the Ministry is working to speed up the installation of water pipes to supply water throughout Phnom Penh.

Naro confirmed that at present, the Water Supply Authority has been working to install water mains pipes along Win-Win Boulevard from the base of the Prek Pnov Bridge to National Road 4 to ensure adequate water supply in this area.

He continued that in some areas there may be a problem of low water pressure due to the increase in population living in that area. However, the PPWSA has been preparing to expand to increase pressure. Naro added that if people notice that the area where they live has low water pressure, please provide information to the PPWSA so that the PPWSA can solve it in time.

    CALL FOR PAPER

How is climate change adaptation transforming water and sanitation services, governance, management and design?

    A focus on African cities

“2023 is about to become the hottest year on record on our planet. Climate change and its effects are set to accelerate, urging human societies to take action. Meanwhile, the challenge of providing safe water and sanitation to all remains daunting in many locations. For decades, many cities in Africa and Asia have been struggling to expand quality service in the face of rapid and chaotic urbanization, population growth, lack of capacity and resources. Climate change now heightens uncertainty.By nurturing slow-moving threats, such as rising sea levels and disruption of rainfall regimes, and by increasing the probability of extreme events such as droughts, floodings, and fires, it feeds population displacements and potentially contributes to political unrest . How does this evolution push actors of the water sector to think differently about how to design and manage urban water utilities? How can they adapt to a dramatic but uncertain change?…”

    A farmer’s best friend

People are often surprised to learn that radio is a powerful tool in international development. In rural Africa, where we work, people depend on it as their primary source of information. That’s why we’ve used radio to help farmers help themselves for nearly 40 years. And now we combine it with newer technologies like mobile phones to make it more powerful than ever before.

The present and the future of African #WaterManagement

Water executives constantly need to up their game to keep pace with ever changing water challenges.

Rapidly evolving demographics, climate change, incomplete infrastructure, limited funding: many of these executives would whisper “Bingo” in a sigh. ✅

Yet one thing’s for sure: they would never give up on their mission to better the water service to their communities.

That’s why for nearly one year, they take theoretical learning from top notch professors, hands-on study of best practices across the continent, applied learning with their own thesis project… and some fast-paced intensive masterclasses, like mine on water innovation. ?

When I met this year’s cohort of AgroParisTech’s Chaire Eau pour Tous yesterday, I was stunned by their fast-paced and sharp insights and feedback on my course: these first 8h felt like a blink!

I hope they’ve learned from me as much as I learned from them, and as we’re heading into Day 2 at ESSEC Business School Africa, I’m truly amazed by the curriculum and casting Lylian Coelho F and jean antoine Faby have put together.

We all know that #Water is a people’s industry. Well no doubt here, we’re in good hands. ?
